Why Did My Transmission Fail?
Of the
transmissions that enter our shop, over 80% failed due to design flaws. These
are failures that were not caused by abuse, misuse, lack of maintenance, or
excessive mileage.
A design flaw is characterized by a repeated failure in a
specific area in any one type of transmission. Many products are available
from the manufacturer and in the aftermarket to alleviate these problems.
Correcting the root cause of failure gives Suburban Transmissions the ability
to provide long-term warranties.
Most Common Domestic Transmission Problems
The most common domestic cars we service are the Ford Taurus and Windstar,
the overdrive Chrysler transmissions in the Dodge Caravan and Plymouth
Voyager and GM overdrives.
The most common SUV for automatic transmission
repairs is the Ford Explorer, but Dodge trucks are most common among
pick-ups. For foreign vehicles, Acura and Honda transmissions are the most
common, while Lexus and Toyota units seem to last the longest. Nissan
transmissions are problematic in the Maxima, Ultima, and the Quest. The most
labor-intensive transmission repair is on the Cadillac DeVille, SeVille, and
Eldorado with the Northstar engine. Many Cadillacs have solenoid problems
that can be inexpensively repaired.
Common Low-Cost Repairs
A very common low-cost repair is the ‘94 and newer GMC and Chevrolet trucks.
The symptoms include a loss of torque converter lockup and may be noticed as
over-revving when on the highway. If scanned, a code #1870 is usually
present. The problem with the Chevy truck is not in the electronics but in
the transmission control mechanism, known as the valve body. It is a
hydraulic problem. The affected components can be replaced without removing
the transmission.
